Principal Investigator at AZTI - Tecnalia (Spain), a private research foundation.

Marine ecologist, member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency (EEA), in the fields of marine spatial planning and marine ecosystems. Author of more than 350 publications, he is one of the most-cited authors in the field of ecology and environment. He has participated in more than 120 national, European and international projects, in the past 35 years. He was coordinator of the European project DEVOTES (DEVelopment Of innovative Tools for understanding marine biodiversity and assessing good Environmental Status), awarded in 2018 for its impactful knowledge transfer, and having participated in many other EU projects, e.g. INDECO (indicators of fishing), ECASA (indicators of aquaculture), MEECE (modelling to predict impacts), MESMA (marine spatial management), MESHAtlantic (marine habitats), WISER (indicators for the Water Framework Directive), MARS (Managing aquatic ecosystems under multiple stress), ResponSEAble (Ocean Literacy). In 2017 was awarded with the European Environmental Education Award, by SETAC.

TORSTEN

BERG

Lecturer.

Researcher and Project management at MariLim aquatic research GmbH (Germany).

Marine biologist with expertise in benthic ecology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics.  More than 15 years of experience in developing assessment systems (including Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive) and performing environmental assessments, monitoring programmes and research projects. Practical knowledge in sampling and survey techniques and analysis of macrozoobenthos and marine biotopes. Taxonomical expertise in marine macrozoobenthos. More than 15 years of experience in software development and databases, geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical data analysis. Participation in scientific expeditions in North and Baltic Sea. Member in national and international groups for quality assurance and method development in marine monitoring (BLMP, HELCOM, WFD, MSFD). He is the software developer of NEAT and one of the DEVOTES project researchers involved in the development of this assessment tool.

HELIANA TEIXEIRA

Course organizer.

Assistant researcher at Dept. Biology & CESAM of the University of Aveiro (Portugal).

​

Marine benthic ecologist, whose research focuses on the use of ecological indicators to understand trends in estuarine, coastal and marine ecosystems, in relation to anthropogenic disturbance and climate change. With her research she gathers scientific evidence in support of environmental policies and conservation actions. She was involved in DEVOTES project, contributing to the catalogue of indicators DEVOTool. Currently working on H2020 AQUACROSS Project “Knowledge, Assessment, and Management for AQUAtic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services aCROSS EU policies”.
